New Terminator Movie: Promising

Posted in Uncategorized on January 6, 2009 by nerdchieftain

A while ago, I posted some deranged rants on the nature of the Terminator universe time travel.  Centered around the idea of “The Future is Not Set, There is No Fate But What We Make For Ourselves,” I argued that the Connors and Skynet were in a recursive time war (the Connors make a move, change the future, which changes Skynet, and Skynet acts to alter time, the Connors respond, ….)  In this case, I argued that Terminator 3 does fit into the universe as a possible alternate future for John Connor, which is one of these time lines that existed but ultimately got changed.

Now, Terminator Salvation has come along and it seems to play along these themes.  In the trailer, John Connor says something to effect “This is not the Skynet my mother warned me about.”  On this note, I think this is a welcome sequel.  Although, I had hoped more for a prequel movie, where Kyle Reese is a hero.

Season 2 Halfway Point

Posted in Uncategorized on December 24, 2008 by nerdchieftain

OK,

So it is no secret here at TermiNerd that interest has waned with Season 2.  Since we were left with a mid-season cliff-hanger, it is time we discussed what has been troubling us.

Season One was edgy:  Stylistically very similar to Terminator 2, it focused on Sarah Connor’s thoughts and inner struggles.  We approached serious themes, and had fun watching a Terminator go through the pubescent struggles of High School.

So, here is my list of complaints with all the “popcorn-sell-your-TV-show-to-the-masses” shtick

  • The time war: OK, all continuity has been lost.  Season One implied some sort of inevitability: John sent his Terminator back (Cameron) to prevent SkyNet being built.  This implies a level of desperation.  The time plot has gone from making any bit of sense to simply being an excuse for the new bad guy to appear.  Is there an long-term story arch, or is time travel the new warp drive aka futurustic plot device?   Is time travel integral to the story telling or not?
  • The Connors ran from Chromartie way too long.  They have taken them out with way less resources (like a healthy Terminator), they should have hunter HIM.
  • We got rid of the whole high school scene.  Cameron at prom?  That would have been awesome.
  • Along the lines of an out-of-control time war:  a Terminator sent to kill Ellison.
  • Why did they kill the good doctor so cheaply?
  • We could forgive the change in the High School plot with Riley.  But we can’t forgive the plot that she is send back from the future to seduce John and keep him from… falling in love with Cameron.. maybe?  (Time travel out-of-control.)
  • The Alien technology Cliff hangar: since when does James Cameron go all George Lucas Indy IV style on us?

I am sure there are more.  Let’s gripe together.

Peace,

Where’s Charlie?

So, Charlie Dixon just disappeared from the teleplay without a peep.  Where did he go?  What would he do?  I would have thought that he would have joined the fight as one of the Baums.

I don’t like loose plot ends!

Tales of Alison Young

Posted in Uncategorized on October 10, 2008 by nerdchieftain

So, we learned in episode IV via flashback that Cameron assumed the identity of a resistance fighter named Alison Young.

We know that something happened between Derek and Cameron, presumbaly when she took Alison Young’s place.  But what happened?

I can’t wait to find out.

Season 2 Episode 5 takes it up a notch

I have to admit, I was feeling a little un-fan-like:  I was tired of the Connors not fighting back.  It’s Cameron vs any other Terminator, plus Sarah’s shotgun and Derek’s grenade launcher.

Why aren’t they setting up a trap for Chromartie?  Because that plot line is reserved for Agent Ellison, that’s why.  SIGH  Cheri and Morris aren’t back yet (thanks for pointing that out, Adam).  John isn’t going back to High School?  But Cameron has to go to Prom with Morris, yo.

So, the season had me down.

Then, they pawned a random terminator using clues from the bloody garage list.  Way to go, team.  I’m glad to see the show is not going to be Terminator: SCR (See Connors Run).

Season 2 Recap

Posted in Uncategorized on September 20, 2008 by nerdchieftain

It doesn’t get much better than FOX on-demand.  I just watched Season 2 Episode 1 and 2 again.  There are a lot of details I could capture with the pause button.  This post is pretty much a mish-mash of random observations and detail that may be important.

One thing I have been wanting to do for a while is to capture Sarah’s monologues.  I believe Season 1 had one monologue per episode, and it was a favorite trademark of the show for me.  These first two episodes of Season 2 don’t have them.  Although there are conversations equally and powerfully as poignant between Sarah and Cameron.

Sarah, “Am I just gonna go off, like some kind of time bomb?”

Cameron, “I don’t know, am I?”

Sarah, “Are you alive in there?”

Cameron, “I was thinking about what to do next.”

Sarah, “Since when?”
